Mr de Beer
Terms

Building a book is free. Some extras cost money, and you see the price before you pay. Here is what that means, in plain words.
The list is not an order
Joining the list on this site places no obligation on you and takes no payment. It means we will email you when the builder opens, or when the plush bear is back in stock.
You can leave the list at any time, and you do not have to give a reason.
Free credits while they last
New accounts get free credits while we have them to give. When they are all given out, a new account starts with none, and credits are bought. Reading a book on a screen is always free. The builder itself is always free. There is no subscription for the builder, and there will not be one.
Credits, a membership and printed copies cost money. Credits are used up when you ask the AI for a rewrite or a new picture. A print is paid per copy. Every price is shown before you pay, and nothing is charged without you pressing a button that says so.
The prices on this site are not final until they are shown as final. The price in the builder at the moment you pay is the price.
Who takes the money
In the iPhone app, credits and the Mr de Beer Pass are bought through Apple, with your Apple ID. Apple takes the payment.
In the Android app, credits and the Mr de Beer Pass are bought through Google Play, with your Google account. Google Play takes the payment.
On the web app (app.mnrdebeer.com) you buy credit packs and the Pass through PayFast, in rand. A printed book and the Book Club are paid through PayFast too, on any device.
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, at https://reportaproblem.apple.com.
Refunds for Google Play purchases are handled by Google Play: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2479637
Refunds for anything paid through PayFast are handled by us. Email hallo@mnrdebeer.com, and we make the refund through PayFast.
Apple's standard licence terms (the EULA) apply to everything you buy through the App Store: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/
Membership
There are two memberships. The Mr de Beer Pass gives you 60 credits every month, read aloud on every book, and 20% off printed books. The Book Club gives you a printed book every three months (hard cover, 20 cm, your own book or one from our library), with delivery of that book included, plus everything in the Pass. Pop-up Pages are free for everyone, with or without a membership.
A membership renews by itself, every month or every year, until you cancel it. You can cancel any time. You keep everything until the end of the time you paid for, and then it stops. Credits you already have stay in your account.
The Book Club's book: on a monthly membership, you get a book after every three months you have paid for. On a yearly membership, you get four books a year, one every three months. You choose the book in the app. Extra printed books are 20% off, and in South Africa their delivery is included. The Book Club ships in South Africa only.
How to cancel: a Pass bought in the iPhone app is cancelled in your Apple ID settings, at least 24 hours before it renews. A Pass bought in the Android app is cancelled in Google Play, under Subscriptions. A membership paid through PayFast (the Book Club, or a Pass on the web app) is cancelled in the app on the Account screen, or by email to hallo@mnrdebeer.com. Our Support page shows you how.
If a payment does not go through, your membership keeps working for a few days while it is tried again. If it still does not go through, the membership stops.
We no longer sell the monthly credit plan or a voice for one book. If you have one, it keeps working: the plan until you cancel it, and the voice on that book.
The Story Pack
A Story Pack is for one book from our library, or a set of them. It is the printed book, read aloud, and free credits. You pay once, through PayFast, and it ships in South Africa only. It is not a subscription.
What comes with a Story Pack stays yours for as long as we run Mr de Beer. The same goes for anything you buy once for a library book, like its read aloud. It stays on your account, even if you never take a membership.
Your book is yours
The words and pictures the builder makes with you belong to you. You may read them, print them, give them away or sell the printed copy. We do not publish your book, use it in advertising, or use it to train anything.
You are responsible for what you put in. Do not write real people other than your own family into a story, and do not use it to copy someone else's characters or brands. The builder will refuse some requests for that reason, and for a child's sake it will not write violence, fear beyond a storybook's, or romance.
AI makes mistakes
The draft is written and painted by an AI from the words you give. It can get a name wrong, draw a hand with six fingers, or miss the point of the story. That is why every page can be changed and why you read every page before your child does. Check a book before you print it. A printed copy is a copy of what you approved.
Prints
Prints are paid through PayFast, in rand, and ship in South Africa only for now. A print order is placed when you pay. We show the full price, shipping included, and the expected delivery date before you do. If we cannot make or deliver it, we refund it in full.
A print that arrives damaged or wrongly made is replaced or refunded. A print of a book you later wish you had edited is not — it is a copy of what you approved. Read it twice.
Credits and refunds
Credits do not expire while your account exists. They have no cash value: they cannot be cashed out, sold, or moved to another account. If a rewrite or a picture fails on our side, the credit is returned to you.
If you delete your account, unused credits are lost. We say so again on the delete screen. Deleting your account does not cancel a membership or the old credit plan. Cancel it first: with Apple on iPhone, in Google Play on Android, or on the Account screen for a membership paid through PayFast.
A credit pack bought on the web app through PayFast can be refunded within 14 days of buying it, if it is unused. A pack is unused while your balance still has all of its credits. A pack you have started to use is not refunded.
Within 7 days of buying, we refund everything you paid. From day 8 to day 14, we refund what you paid less PayFast's processing fee, because PayFast does not give that fee back to us. To ask, email hallo@mnrdebeer.com.
Your rights as a consumer
Nothing here limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, including your rights on a purchase made at a distance.
